The theory that the universe was born in a black hole is not a new one. In fact it was proposed by Professor Lee Smolin as a way to explain that the universe is in fact the offspring of another universe. Professor Smolin suggests that the previous universe to our own collapsed from one giant star at the end of its life into a super massive black hole. When this black hole had been created and the entire previous universe collected into the singularity within it, our own universe was born. For this theory to work it requires the entire universe to retract back from its ever growing and possibly infinite size and collapse into a black hole. This is where I see the problem; I do believe that the universe could have spawned form a black hole but not form one super massive black hole. This would require too much energy as the universe would need to collapse back into a single star.
