Suppose you can only measure some length with at most a precision of 1mm. Now you measure this length numerous times and take the average. Statistically you should get a better and better estimation of the true mean since the variance falls of like σ/√(N).
But what should I use as uncertainty and can you apply the above rule for the variance when as here you can measure the length of the stick with a precision greater than 1mm? I mean after performing enough measurements you would find σ<1mm but how can that make sense?
